Oil Painting Paper

I recently finished an oil painting on cotton paper. Although I’ve primed 640gsm cotton rag paper for oil painting with acrylic gesso before, this time I used a paper from Arches that’s prepared for oil painting by the manufacturer.

The paper has a fine grain that’s barely perceptible in the final painting (if you paint thinly). It’s also more absorbent than an oil or acrylic primed canvas. Perhaps it’s the texture and absorbency that helps to give the painting an overall feeling of softness, which I found was more pronounced compared with an oil primed linen surface (but this could just be due to the way that I paint). Nevertheless, I like it.
