I had some fabric leftover from my last sewing project so I decided to use it to make a sample of a Canadian smocking pattern. After watching several video tutorials on the Tube and reading a couple of articles I sewed a flower pattern.

I didn’t have enough fabric to create a large grid of squares for the template so I just sewed two rows of flowers (the pencil lines you can see are the grid lines I made).
I left an extra space between the flowers just to see what would happen and I added some beads to the centre of each flower. There wasn’t quite enough fabric to make a full square in the second row so the flowers aren’t exactly the same size as those in the first row, but this has given me enough of an idea of the beautiful effects you can create with this technique.
