Gathering

September 16th, 2023

It has been a while.

Much has been changing, though not in an immediately visible way. Linear time, and all the daily requirements that live within it, seems to be moving faster, yet efforts to rebuild a foundation are moving in a distinct timeframe, the fruits of which show no signs of materialising in a speedy manner—oh, to be at the whims of impatience!

As you know, the last few years have been scarred by excruciating losses and rupturing upheavals, such are the burdens of unyielding sorrows that deny the progression of preferential plans and force a redirection.

Home is very much a missed place, although now it only exists in bygone remnants of a dream cocooned in the delicate beauty of umbellifers and poppies, the uplifting melodies of the robin and blackbird, and the spectacular blue of an autumn sky, dotted with a glimmering display of the russet and gold leaves of plane trees.

Extremes of temperature here demand a thorny toughness from the flora and fauna to survive. Despite this, delicacy can still be found—feathery wild grasses manage to thrive at roadsides with the occasional wildflower growing among them, sheltering its paper-like petals from the searing heat. A perfect illustration of the quiet strength and tenacity that can be found in gentleness.

The closure of potential paths has directed a renewed focus on the work. Undisturbed by the familiarity and comforts of life at home, there is no choice but to retreat and purify the intent behind each piece of work as well as the process of bringing it to life, irrespective of the medium. Perhaps this is something you are experiencing?

At the moment, painting is at the forefront of the working day. Supported, of course, by writing and music composition although they are all probably more fluidly intertwined then the suggested demarcations put in place by a human mind. The painting process has further developed into a gathering of things, from the past and present (oh, wouldn’t it be fun if from the future too!) that hold significance, calling attention to the beauty that is to be found in experiences and places.

It would be wonderful to hear about the discoveries you have made in your work. Please do write when you have time.

Sincerely and in great friendship,
SC
